AI-Powered Smart City Initiative Takes Shape in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is poised to become a showcase for the power of artificial intelligence (AI) with the launch of a $2.5 billion smart city project by Bold Technologies, a subsidiary of Bold Holdings, and international AI company My Aion. This ambitious endeavor, christened Aion Sentia Cognitive City, aims to transform urban infrastructure through AI, encompassing various aspects of city life.
The platform’s core engine, Maia, developed by My Aion, is designed to manage and optimize complex urban systems, including mobility, energy, education, healthcare, and digital services. The companies envision a city where AI seamlessly integrates into daily life, with My Aion CEO Daniele Marinelli highlighting the potential for personalized experiences: “The AI will know the user well enough to “recommend the perfect place for your anniversary dinner and book it for you without you lifting a finger.”
A Build-Operate-Transfer Model for Public-Private Partnership
The project is structured under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, a common framework for large-scale infrastructure and technology projects. This public-private partnership model allows private entities to invest in and manage the project for a specified period, recouping their investments and earning profits during the operational phase. At the end of this period, ownership and control of the developed systems are transferred to the government or a public sector entity.
Job Creation and Economic Growth
Bold Technologies CEO Thani Al Thani Al Falasi emphasizes the project’s positive impact on the UAE‘s economy and workforce: “This initiative will support job creation for UAE nationals, foster local innovation and contribute meaningfully to the national AI ecosystem.”
My Aion‘s relocation to Abu Dhabi for this project signifies the region’s growing attractiveness as a hub for AI innovation. Marinelli underscores the strategic advantages of the UAE: “The UAE offers the infrastructure and institutional support needed to scale responsibly and strategically.”
Aion Sentia: A Catalyst for Smart City Development
The project, expected to launch within 18 months, is anticipated to generate significant interest in the smart city sector. The Aion Sentia Cognitive City platform has the potential to serve as a model for other urban centers seeking to leverage AI for improved efficiency and citizen well-being. As AI continues to play a more prominent role in various aspects of life, initiatives like this highlight the potential for transformative impact on urban environments.
