Coinbase Data Breach Under DOJ Investigation: Bribery, Extortion, and User Losses

US Justice Department Probing Coinbase Data Breach

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is actively investigating Coinbase‘s recent data breach, focusing on a disturbing aspect: the alleged involvement of customer support agents in India who accepted bribes to compromise user information. This development comes after Coinbase disclosed the breach on May 15, stating that a group of customer support contractors – subsequently fired – “abused their access to […] systems to steal the account data for a small subset of customers.”

According to a Bloomberg report, the DOJ‘s investigation centers around the actions of these contractors. Coinbase‘s Chief Legal Officer, Paul Grewal, confirmed that the company is cooperating with law enforcement agencies, both domestically and internationally, and welcomes their pursuit of criminal charges against the individuals responsible.

Significant Fallout from the Breach

The consequences of the data breach have been significant, with the attackers exploiting the compromised information to orchestrate sophisticated social engineering attacks targeting Coinbase users. These attacks resulted in substantial financial losses, estimated at up to $400 million. Notably, a partner at venture capital firm Sequoia Capital fell victim to these attacks, underscoring the reach and impact of the breach.

The attackers also attempted to extort $20 million from Coinbase, demanding the company suppress details of the breach. However, Coinbase refused to give in to these demands.

The social engineering attacks have prompted numerous Coinbase users to file lawsuits against the exchange, claiming the company mishandled their personal data. A retired artist, Ed Suman, reported losing $2 million to the scammers, highlighting the immense financial hardship inflicted on individuals.

This incident raises serious concerns about the security of user data within cryptocurrency exchanges. While Coinbase has taken steps to address the breach and fire the implicated contractors, the ongoing DOJ investigation underscores the severity of the issue and its potential for broader implications within the crypto industry.

“We have notified and are working with the DOJ and other US and international law enforcement agencies and welcome law enforcement’s pursuit of criminal charges against these bad actors,” – Paul Grewal, Chief Legal Officer, Coinbase.

This is a developing story, and we will continue to update this report as further information becomes available.
